What can i use to make a homemade electric winch 12 volt for a homemade trailer? What can i use to make a homemade electric winch 12 volt for a homemade trailer? Look on ebay for a "gear motor" -- essentially an electric motor mated to a "reduction gearbox" -- I see 'em on there once in a while. You need a high gear ratio to develop torque. Also a heavy-duty "normally off momentary switch", which you can find pretty cheap at a car parts store. While you're there, pick up a 12V automotive inline fuse holder, and some fuses...get a 20, a 30, a 40 and a 50 amp fuse. These are so you can do some trial and error testing. Once you've determined the amps you need to pull your max load, replace it with a circuit breaker. This whole shooting match won't be more than $10. Don't leave the fuse or breaker out. It's a really cheap way to prevent the total destruction of your project. If the cable jams, or something else prevents the load from moving, the motor will burn out quick, or worse, start a fire. Also, don't fail to match your wire gauge size to the fuse or breaker -- try to draw too many amps through too small of wire, it'll heat up enough to melt the insulation and start a fire.
